Community of Hope Lutheran
Church Education Wing Groundbreaking
On Sunday, April 6, members of Community of Hope
Lutheran Church celebrat(ed) the groundbreaking for a new 6,500
square foot educational wing to their main building. The church sits
at the corner of Stafford and Boeckman Roads in Wilsonville, and has
about 490 members. It is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA). The addition will include 4 times more
space for classes for preschoolers through adults. Currently, room
space is so limited that various classes and practicing musicians
rotate in a schedule though larger spaces like the sanctuary, and
classes sometimes meet in offices and the kitchen. The new space
will give the children's classes the space they need for more active
learning, and open up regular space for teens and adults.
Community of Hope members are active throughout the larger
community, locally, regionally and even internationally. The church
is a major sponsor of Wilsonville Community Sharing, provides
worship space for Rock of Horeb, a Spanish-language congregation,
and is active in other community projects, especially in local
nursing homes. The congregation also organizes and sponsors a
week-long camp for children from Clackamas County who are in foster
care, Royal Family Kids' Camp, and sends members to Iambi hospital
in Tanzania to help with construction and education projects there.
Congregation President Lynn Ries says, "The building is an outward
sign of our active, growing congregation. It provides us a base
where we can learn what we need to before we go out with the love of
Christ into the world ."
Construction is expected to begin later this month. Construction
will take place mostly on the east side of the existing building,
alongside Stafford Road. The project is expected to be completed in
September.
